Many of my clients say, "There's just no other place for the desk." I get it—especially in small homes or apartments, the bedroom often becomes the only option. But while it might seem like the only solution, having a desk in the bedroom can create an imbalance of energy that affects both your sleep and your work life.
In Feng Shui, the bedroom is meant for rest, relaxation, and intimacy—soft, nurturing, yin energy. On the other hand, a desk represents productivity, creativity, and the hustle of everyday life—yang energy. When these two forces collide in one space, it can leave you feeling restless and overworked.
If the first thing you see in the morning is your desk—especially a cluttered one with electronics—you may feel like you need to keep work all the time! This can disrupt your ability to truly "switch off," which leads to stress, sleepless nights, and a negative impact on your relationships.
If the desk must remain in your bedroom, there are a few Feng Shui cures you can apply. First, ensure your bed is in a "command position," ideally across from the door but not directly in line with it. This promotes restful sleep. For your desk, consider separating it from the bed—perhaps with a privacy screen or fabric to create a clear boundary. If you have a smaller space, cover your desk and electronics at the end of each day to "put them to sleep," which will help your mind relax.
Making these adjustments can improve your sleep, reduce stress, and help you approach your work with more clarity and energy. And when you feel better, it will positively impact your relationships, too.
